CUMMINS SWITCH ON THE FLY CSP OBD VS CCV

CUMMINS SWITCH-ON-THE-FLY OBD VS CCV

An OBD-style Shift On The Fly (SOTF) switch, commonly referred to as CSP5, is a five-position rotary switch that plugs into the vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port and allows the driver to switch between multiple preloaded tuning calibrations while the vehicle is running.

The switch itself does not contain tuning files. It functions strictly as a selector, telling the engine control module (ECM) which calibration slot to operate from.

“CSP5” simply refers to the ability to select up to five separate tune positions.

A CCV-based Shift On The Fly (SOTF) switch is a tuning control method that allows the driver to switch between multiple preloaded tuning calibrations while the vehicle is running by using a voltage signal through the CCV (crankcase ventilation) sensor circuit.

Unlike OBD-style switches, the CCV SOTF does not use the OBD-II port. Instead, it communicates directly with the ECM through a dedicated sensor reference circuit.

The switch itself does not contain tuning files. It functions strictly as a selector, instructing the ECM which internal tune slot to operate from.

Which SOTF Switch Do You Need for Your Vehicle?

2007.5 – 2021 Cummins: OBD-Style Switch is Recommended

For Cummins built between 2007.5 and 2021, an OBD-style SOTF switch (such as a CSP5-type) is the recommended solution. This style plugs into the OBD-II port and is widely supported by tuning providers for these model years.

2022 and Newer Cummins: CCV Style Switch is Recommended

For 2022 and newer Cummins engines, a CCV-based SOTF switch that uses the crankcase ventilation circuit is the recommended approach.

Best Recommendation: Purchase Both Switch Types

- There are features one switch has that the other does not.

If you want the most flexibility and to experience the differences in benefits and features between the two methods, the best recommendation is to have both an OBD-style switch and a CCV-style switch available. This allows you to:

  • Compare how each switch feels and operates
  • Test compatibility with your tuning setup
  • Decide which installation style you prefer
  • Have options depending on how your tune is configured
