ECM INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
ECM INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
SAFETY FIRST
-
Work in a well-ventilated, level area with the parking brake applied.
-
Disconnect both batteries before beginning any work.
IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE CONTINUING
DO NOT remove any parts from the vehicle until the replacement ECM has been installed, the truck has been started, driven, and you have confirmed everything is functioning properly.
We strongly recommend installing the replacement ECM and verifying proper vehicle operation before performing any additional modifications or disassembly. This allows you to confirm the ECM installation independently and helps eliminate unnecessary troubleshooting if an issue arises.
Once you have verified the truck starts, idles, drives properly, and no warning lights or immobilizer issues are present, you may proceed with any remaining installation or modifications.
ECM REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1. Disconnect both batteries.
2. Remove the factory ECM.
3. Install the replacement ECM.
Ensure all mounting tabs are properly secured and every electrical connector is fully seated and locked into place.
Failure to properly secure the ECM or connectors may result in internal ECM damage or communication issues.
4. Reassemble any components required to safely start the vehicle.
If desired, leave the inner fender liner removed so the ECM and connectors remain accessible during the initial startup and inspection.
ELECTRICAL RECONNECTION & INITIAL CHECKS
5. Reconnect both batteries.
6. Verify the Cummins SGW (Bypass) cable is installed correctly.
7. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position without starting the engine.
8. Clear any engine diagnostic trouble codes.
Use HP Tuners VCM Scanner or any compatible OBD-II scan tool.
9. Verify the red Security/Immobilizer light.
If the red security light turns off after key-on:
-
Start the engine.
-
Allow the engine to idle.
-
Verify there are no abnormal warning lights or messages.
10. Test drive the vehicle.
Before removing any additional parts or beginning any further installation, drive the truck and verify:
-
Engine starts normally
-
Engine idles smoothly
-
Vehicle drives normally
-
Transmission shifts properly
-
No warning lights return
-
No new diagnostic trouble codes are present
If the engine will not start, the red security light remains illuminated, or any abnormal condition exists, stop immediately and contact support before continuing.
FINAL REASSEMBLY
11. Once proper operation has been confirmed:
-
Reinstall the inner fender liner.
-
Reinstall any remaining trim panels or vehicle components.
-
Complete any remaining installation work.
ADDITIONAL CABLE NOTES
CCV SOTF Cable
If equipped with a CCV SOTF cable, verify it is routed and connected correctly.
Improper installation can cause:
-
Incorrect SOTF operation
-
Driveability issues
-
Communication faults
TRANSMISSION INFORMATION
68RFE Transmission
68RFE-equipped trucks require either:
-
A Quick Learn procedure using a capable scan tool, or
-
Approximately 500 miles of stop-and-go driving for adaptive learning to complete.
Our Cummins 68RFE tuning includes both engine and transmission tuning.
You should expect:
-
Firmer shifts
-
Increased converter lockup
-
Higher clutch apply pressures
These characteristics are normal and are intentionally calibrated to improve transmission performance and longevity.
Aisin Transmission
Aisin TCM tuning is sold separately.
Once installed, the transmission will also require approximately 500 miles of stop-and-go driving to fully relearn its adaptive shift strategy.
FINAL REMINDER
Before considering the installation complete, verify:
-
All ECM connectors are fully seated.
-
All grounds are tight and secure.
-
Battery terminals are properly tightened.
-
Wiring harnesses are routed away from moving or hot components.
-
All bypass cables and SOTF cables are installed correctly.
A final inspection can help prevent unnecessary issues after installation.
