INSTRUCTIONS FOR E42 TUNING AND FLASHING

IMPORTANT: HP TUNERS VCM EDITOR BETA & VCM SCANNER BETA ONLY!

STEP 1 — INSTALL & VERIFY ECM / TCM

Once you receive your ECM, TCM, or both back, reinstall them into the truck.

Start the vehicle and verify that everything is working properly with no communication issues or other problems.

You may need to clear codes using HP Tuners VCM Scanner Beta.

DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE ECM AND/OR TCM ARE INSTALLED AND WORKING CORRECTLY.

STEP 2 — READ YOUR STOCK FILES

Once you have verified that the ECM and TCM are working properly, use HP Tuners VCM Editor Beta to read the factory files from the vehicle.

BETA ONLY!

Read the ECM and TCM separately and save each stock file.

Email the stock read files to us and include:

  • Order number

  • Year

  • Make

  • Model

  • Clearly identify which file is the ECM and which is the TCM

STEP 3 — PURCHASE & SYNC HP TUNERS CREDITS

You will need to purchase the required ECM and/or TCM credits directly through HP Tuners.

Make sure the credits are properly synced to your HP Tuners interface before attempting to license or flash the modules.

STEP 4 — PRACTICE FLASH YOUR STOCK FILES

After you have successfully read and saved your factory calibrations, flash the same stock files you just read back into the ECM and TCM.

This step is required so you can become familiar with the HP Tuners flashing process before installing the modified files we send you.

This helps eliminate confusion and minimizes the chance of customer error when flashing the modified calibrations.

DO NOT PROCEED TO THE MODIFIED FILES UNTIL YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY FLASHED YOUR STOCK FACTORY CALIBRATIONS BACK INTO THE VEHICLE.

STEP 5 — INSTALL THE BASE 0 HP FILE

Once your stock flash has been completed successfully, you can move forward with the modified files we provide.

The first modified file we send will be a Base 0 HP Emissions-Off file.

We start with a base 0 HP file to verify that the initial calibration is functioning correctly before any additional power or custom options are added.

We complete the tuning process in stages to minimize confusion and reduce the possibility of customer-side flashing or installation errors.

STEP 6 — FLASH ECM & TCM SEPARATELY

Load the ECM and TCM separately using VCM Editor Beta.

After flashing the files, use VCM Scanner Beta and clear all codes twice.

After the base file has been flashed successfully, the DEF gauge on the dash should display “UNAVAILABLE.”

STEP 7 — TEST DRIVE BEFORE REMOVING PARTS

DO NOT REMOVE OR INSTALL ANY PARTS YET.

Drive the truck with the base file installed and verify that everything is operating properly.

Make sure:

  • Truck starts and runs normally

  • ECM and TCM communication is working

  • No unexpected warning lights are present

  • Truck drives and shifts properly

  • DEF gauge displays “UNAVAILABLE”

Once everything has been verified, you may begin the removal and installation of your parts.

STEP 8 — INSTALL PARTS & TEST DRIVE AGAIN

Complete the removal and installation of your parts.

Once installation is complete, start the truck and drive it again.

Verify that there are no unexpected warning lights and that the truck drives and operates correctly.

If the truck begins driving erratically or develops drivability issues only after the parts were installed, check your hard-part installation. This is not a tuning issue if the truck operated correctly before the parts were changed.

STEP 9 — REQUEST YOUR MODIFIED POWER FILE

Once everything checks out properly, go to our website and submit a Tune Revision / Support Ticket.

Let us know once the ticket has been submitted.

On the revision form, you will be able to select your requested options, including:

  • Horsepower level

  • Idle sound

  • Available custom tuning options

  • Other applicable preferences

Once we receive and review the completed revision request, we can provide your modified power-added file.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT SKIP STEPS.

The process is intentionally completed in stages:

Verify Modules → Stock Read → Stock Flash → Base 0 HP File → Test Drive → Parts Installation → Test Drive → Modified Power File

Following these steps in order helps minimize flashing errors, installation problems, and unnecessary troubleshooting.
