What Is the CCV System?
The CCV (Crankcase Ventilation) system is responsible for extracting combustion gases that escape past the piston rings and collect in the crankcase. On the L5P Duramax, the CCV system is integrated into the valve cover and connects to the intake air horn. This setup uses Bernoulli’s Principle to create vacuum and route crankcase gases back through the intake for reburning — a requirement for emissions compliance.
Over time, especially in higher-mileage diesels, excessive blow-by causes oil vapors to be carried into the turbocharger inlet. The engine consumes this oil, which can lead to carbon buildup and reduced efficiency.
Why Upgrade?
The factory CCV system on the L5P is made of plastic and is known to crack or fail over time, allowing boost pressure and hot charge air to enter the intake system improperly. Additionally, the OEM system is non-serviceable — if it fails, the entire driver-side valve cover must be removed, requiring fuel line and injector removal, often totaling 6+ hours of labor.
